The creation and origin of Doctor Doom
CREATION
What is Doctor Doom's history? When was he first created, and why is it that he has stood the test of time and made it out on top of so many other villains?
Doctor Doom made his first appearance in the early 1960's, in the Silver Age of Super hero comics. Superhero comics were making a reappearance at this time. They had lost popularity at the end of World War II, but reappeared at a time when good role models in pop culture, and especially comics, were hard to find. Doctor Doom appeared as an opposition to some of those superhero role models. And he certainly became a very frightening opposition.
ORIGIN
Doctor Doom was born as Victor Von Doom to parents who were gypsies in the fictional country Latveria. His mother was a sorceress and was killed by an evil being who she was calling upon for power. His father, a medicine man, was asked to heal the Latverian queen, but when he failed to do so, the king ordered him to be killed. Victor's father died to protect his son and allow him to escape. Other gypsies took Victor in and it wasn't long before he found his mother's books on sorcery and began to train himself.
Victor Von Doom grew to be a highly intelligent man and was offered a scholarship at a college in the United States. There he met Reed Richards who would later become Mr. Fantastic, his arch nemesis. Brilliant with technology, Victor tried to create a machine designed to bring his mother back. Richards tried to stop him, but Victor wouldn't listen to reason. The machine backfired, exploding and scarring Victor's face.
Victor left to roam the world, eventually studying the ways of a group of monks and becoming their leader. When the monks created him a suit of armor, he was too eager to put it on, and he burned his face on the hot metal mask, scarring him further. He went on to kill the king of Latveria and imprison other members of the royal family, and then usurp the throne, becoming the new monarch of Latveria.
