THe CREATION AND ORIGIN of green arrow
CREATION
The Green Arrow was created by Mort Weisinger and George Papp. The inspiration for the Green Arrow came from a series of old films called the Green Archer which were based off of books by Edgar Wallace. The creator borrowed many ideas from the Batman series to create the Green Arrow. Due to the fact that they were owned by the same company, they had many similarities. Both were billionaire playboys, orphans, had sidekicks and had their special vehicles (batmobile, arrowcar). Green Arrow for about thirty years of his creation was a minor character in the DC Comics universe appearing in intervals to help the Justice Friends, which would eventually turn into the Justice League. Green Arrow eventually became a much more frequent hero in the DC universe, having his own comics series and rogues gallery.
ORIGIN
The start of the Green Arrow begins with Oliver Queen, a playboy billionaire from Seattle who became marooned on an island for three years. He was a young boy when his parents died and he inherited millions of dollars from his family. He never gave much to society with his vast wealth; instead, he chose to do what he wanted and made many enemies over time. While he was on a boat trip one of his own employees pushed him off the boat. Oliver Queen was presumed to be dead. Oliver survived and ended up on a supposedly abandoned island. He made a bow to survive on the island doing everything in his power to learn how to be an effective archer in order to survive.
After weeks of just trying to survive he searched the island for any inhabitants. He found a destroyed village with all the inhabitants in it dead. He began to feel a sense of justice and he needed to bring the killer or killers to face their crimes. Oliver over time learned that drug smugglers were using the island and they were the ones who killed the inhabitants. He began his battle to take down the drug smugglers and bring them to justice. He succeeded in taking down the drug smugglers and was able to turn them into the authorities. From there he decided to become a costumed vigilante using his bow and arrows, making them green as well as his costume to reflect the island he lived on for so long with all its natural greenery. Over time he would become a member of the Justice League.
The CW currently is airing a modern day telling of the Green Arrow in a series called Arrow. Instead of being marooned on an island for three years in this retelling he was on the island for five years. He along with his father and the crew were on yacht trip traveling through the Pacific Ocean where a gigantic storm caused the yacht to break apart. Everyone died except for him, his father, and a crew member of the yacht. While surviving only using a lifeboat, Oliver’s father tells him the destruction of the yacht was no accident and tells Oliver that he is not the man Oliver thinks he is. He tells Oliver to right their families wrongs and beseeches him to survive. His father kills himself along with the crew member that was working with someone to kill Oliver’s father. Oliver reaches an abandoned island where five years of hell begins. The series takes place after the time spent on the island as he becomes a vigilante, and he has flashbacks detailing what happened to him to turn him into the person he is today.
